A Child's Work Across Various Subjects

Promoting Communication through Drawing

Children express themselves in many different ways, and drawing is one significant method for communicating thoughts and emotions. Drawing not only enhances communication skills but also helps children organize their ideas and experiences in a way that is both engaging and meaningful. When children begin to draw and paint, they embark on an intellectual journey that encompasses musical, linguistic, logical, mathematical, and aesthetic dimensions. Additionally, drawing supports cognitive, emotional, and social development, and helps strengthen fine motor skills essential for pre-writing activities. It can also serve a therapeutic function, providing an outlet for expressing self-esteem, emotions, and social competence.

The Benefits of Journaling

Journals provide children with a homeschool portfolio that includes work samples for required subjects. Charlotte Mason advocated the use of notebooks across various subjects, all of which had one thing in common—they were blank! After a brief lesson, children were encouraged to write their narratives in a blank journal, using their own ideas and observations. This approach eliminated busywork and minimized instructions, allowing the children to produce unique pages that reflected their individual understanding.

A blank page empowers children to delve deeper into their lessons. When reflecting on their work, they might ask themselves: What stood out as most meaningful? How should I organize my writing? What message do I want my drawing to convey? The primary requirements are that children learn to read well and record their thoughts and observations in their journals. By combining drawing with journaling, children reinforce the habit of self-education—a lifelong skill they can continue to develop throughout their lives.
