NAEP Achievement Level Results: a Case for Homeschooling in Georgia

It is my hope that parents will feel empowered to consider homeschooling after reflecting on the NAEP assessments from as far back as 1992, which reveal that only 30% to 40% of children in grades 4 through 8 reach proficiency in their education.

In 1998, after reviewing these NAEP results, I became convinced that public educational institutions were incapable of providing my daughters with the academic, social, and religious experiences I grew up with.  I realized that even if I only taught them the basics—reading, writing, and arithmetic—they would benefit from a far more effective learning environment at home. Homeschooling would allow them to thrive in a relaxed, stress-free setting where they could develop Godly characteristics, explore nature, enjoy physical activity, eat nutritious food, and discover their individual talents and academic interests with appreciation, gratitude, and a joyful heart.

The NAEP assessments continue to show that public educational institutions are not meeting, let alone exceeding, expectations for quality education. From 1992 to 2022, reading and mathematics proficiency levels have remained stagnant, with only 30% to 40% of students achieving proficiency.

However, education is more than just academics. Parents should also consider their child’s mental, social, and physical health. A private or homeschool setting offers the advantage of personalized education, where a child's strengths and developmental stages are taken into account. This approach allows for customized learning experiences that build confidence and self-esteem. In this setting, engaging with appropriately challenging material becomes more important than traditional grade levels and test scores, allowing children to thrive, not just survive.
